Happiness - what is it?
What is being Happy? Is it a feeling or is it a state of the mind? These days I am trying to figure out how does one know that one is happy...sometimes i feel it is possibly only a notion towards which we all plough, work and toil and think that one day we would be happy.
To most of us, probably achieving happiness is being happy but in reality we don't achieve the summit ever so does that mean we never attain the actual happiness.
Lez take a step back and think about few notions of happiness:
1) When a chaild is born, everybody around him/her is happy, Why? bcoz he is born? but then that is also shortlived since you will probably find the same people getting tensed and "unhappy" about his/her future etc.
2) When children scroe good marks, but then that is also frivolous because after one exam , there is always another
3) When one gets a promotion or pay hike, but then there is always room to go up and do better than one is doing
4) When one visits a place, maybe just the relaxed feeling, but then that is also shortlived.
We could probably go on enumerating loads of such instances but I doubt one wouldbe able to find any prolonged happiness in anything.
So probably, it means that happiness is more of a discreet at-the-time notion that we feel and nothing that is prolonged. Thats probably a good start. At least we know that one needs to live that particular second/minute when he "thinks" he is happy.

So ... let's extend your theory ... happiness is experienced in discrete moments....that is CORRECT.
However, Individuals have a certain degree of control over how they choose to feel in most of these moments. Those that choose to associate happiness with more moments than less are classified as "happy" while others are not....
Atleast thats my immediate thought after reading your post...
I think the more important discussion would be the illusion of "Achieving Happiness". A lot of folks think of attaining happiness as a long term goal to work towards... when it is not....
Thats why they say .. its a state of mind ... atleast in my book...
